Molecular Imaging of Alzheimer’s Disease Using PET

چکیده
Molecular Imaging Techniques Molecular imaging of the brain aims to quantify various biological processes via the modeling of interactions between a molecular probe and a molecule of interest naturally occurring in a living organism. Brain molecular-imaging techniques such as positron emission tomography (PET) and single photon emission tomography (SPECT) allow clinical investigators to record and analyze such interactions in vivo. PET and SPECT associated with specific molecular probes are sensitive to detecting biological processes in the order of pico-molar (10-12), however these techniques have limited spatial resolution. In contrast, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has a tremendous spatial resolution (sub-milliliter range) but lower sensitivity (micromolar; 10-6) relative to PET and SPECT (Table 1). Together, these techniques reveal critical information with regards to the alterations in the brain’s anatomy and physiology witnessed in dementia, as well as canalizing diagnostic methods and therapeutic interventions.

Detection of Alzheimer\\\\\\\'s Disease using Multitracer Positron Emission Tomography Imaging
Alzheimer's disease is characterized by impaired glucose metabolism and demonstration of amyloid plaques. Individual positron emission tomography tracers may reveal specific signs of pathology that is not readily apparent on inspection of another one. Combination of multitracer positron emission tomography imaging yields promising results. In this paper, 57 Alzheimer's disease neuroimaging ini...

Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and positron emission tomography (PET) are functional nuclear medicine techniques which allow for accurate non-invasive in vivo measurements of a wide range of regional tissue functions in man. Brain functional imaging with SPECT and PET is based on the recording of the distribution of administered radionuclides in three dimensions, thus produc...

Brain positron emission tomography (PET) has also been used over many years to diagnose neurodegenerative diseases, and has advantages over MRI due to its higher sensitivity to detect pathologies at a molecular level. While 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PETCT is an established imaging technique for assisting in the differential diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and other forms of dementia, P...

Alzheimer’s disease is the cause of up to one third of cases of primary progressive aphasia or corticobasal syndrome. The objective of this study was to determine the accuracy of FDG-PET metabolic imaging for detection of Alzheimer’s disease in patients with primary progressive aphasia or corticobasal syndrome. Methods: A cohort of subjects (n = 94) including those with expert clinical diagnosi...
